Austin company gives old tires a second, greener ride

November 9th, 2010

A company based here in Central Texas is trying to change what happens after you wear out the tires on your car and before they head to the local landfill.

More than 200 million tires are discarded every year in the United States and E&G Coatings thinks it might have the solution to the problem. The company has come up with a process of grinding up recycled tires and turning them into crumb rubber. They then take this rubber and mix it with a water based non-toxic sealant that you can use just about anywhere.

That includes fences, roofs, concrete, concrete walkways and basically anything except glass. Every five gallon pale of their product contains 40 percent of crumb rubber and is exactly one and a half tires that you are saving from going into the landfill. An average fence will need about 50 gallons of sealant and will save about 15-20 tires from being thrown into the landfill.

The sealant comes in a variety of colors and the company guarantees its protective coating will last for 10 years. The cost of their product may be slightly higher, but the environmental benefits are well worth it.
