New technology translates into water conservation

June 7th, 2011

Water is one of our most precious resources here in Central Texas. Now that we've fallen back into extreme drought conditions, conservation is even more important.

It's called UgMO and its mission is to save water and ultimately save you money. This system micro-manages your sprinklers and keeps them from overwatering your lawn.

Tony Patek of ABC Home and Commercial Services, says that one of the nice things about this particular system is that it essentially just attaches directly into your existing irrigation clock. The sensors are wireless so it keeps him from having to dig trenches and run a bunch of wires across the yard.

The sensors are constantly monitoring how much water is making its way to the roots of the grass or plants. It then sends that information back to the base station and reports on whether your grass is adequately watered, dry or wet.

The base station works in concert with your existing irrigation system. It acts as the brains of the system and determines when your grass or plants have reached their optimum moisture level on a zone by zone basis. This reducesover-wateringby shutting the system off, which can translate into big savings.

According to Patek, the average homeowner may see water savings of between 20-25 percent, but some of his customers are seeing savings of 40-60 percent.

Installation costs start at about 600 dollars and it takes on average 12-18 months to recoup the cost of the system.
