A Holiday Gift Bazaar Of Green Goods

December 17th, 2007 · No Comments

The one-day event (which recurs a few times a year) was held adjacent to a popular farmer’s market that operates every Saturday year-round. Seeing the two collections of merchants side by side, it was easy to imagine other produce markets around the country stretching out like this themselves. Surely customers willing to spend more for locally grown produce are the same folks interested in non-toxic cleaning products, responsible lawn services, and jewelry made of scrap metal.

If this Ball is any indication, those in other cities could also benefit from the occasional corporate sponsor: burrito chain Chipotle and the makers of Clif bars had each rented a tent to tout their Green cred. (Chipotle features hormone-free meats and veggie burritos and Clif uses organic ingredients in their sports power bars.)

Searles doesn’t know of similar events in other cities and admits that “it’s always a challenge explaining things” to newcomers, though he adds, “I enjoy that.” He realizes that the cultural trend is on his side, and surely it won’t be long before this kind of thing happens all over the country. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that you might have had to explain farmers’ markets to shoppers accustomed to the low price and convenience of the nearest supermarket.
