The whole building is fitted with low-flow plumbing fixtures, low-flow toilets and a water-saving dishwasher and washing machine. Pfeiffer said he and Lerman wanted to avoid the gas pollution that usually occurs from gas stoves, from the water heater, and from the furnace. Instead, the kitchen has an innovative induction stove – an electric stove, made by Alno, which generates a magnetic field to warm steel and iron-based pots and pans. Needless to say, this system does not emit the same level of fumes as a traditional gas stove.
The air-conditioning system has a sealed combustion furnace, and the water heater was placed outside the home.
Finally, the house has many passive energy-saving features. It is oriented to take advantage of the shade in the afternoons and evenings; has deep, numerous overhangs to cool the house, and is covered by a heat-reflective, metal roof.
“We designed and built this house to be a century home,” Pfeiffer said. “It will last for 100 years.”
