Green Governors Fight Climate Change From Coast To Coast

July 29th, 2008 · 1 Comment

The state of Kansas has an energy program division and will be hosting a wind and renewable energy conference in September. In addition, the governor’s website has an interactive component that provides readers with an E-85 fuel locator, gas locator as well as car pool rides. Sebelius appears to be a rising star in the Democratic party and is among the candidates that Sen. Obama is considering as a vice presidential candidate.

Pennsylvania Governor Democrat Edward Rendell signed the Pennsylvania Climate Change Act on July 3. The state’s first global warming law requires the state to keep an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and set up a registry for business and industry to track their emissions and receive credit for pollution reductions.

Rendell also shepherded a program to protect green spaces under a $625 million Growing Greener 2 investment initiative aimed at cleaning up polluted streams and parks and recovering industrial sites, while also creating jobs and investment opportunities.

Although Pennsylvania is a major contributor to global warming due to its coal production, the state now can be part of the solution.

Florida Governor Republican Charlie Crist is knee-deep in environmental issues, having convened two Florida summits on global climate change since taking office in 2007. Deforestation, a large environmental concern in Florida, is the third largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

Last week Gov. Crist met with His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales to discuss solutions to global warming and in particular lessening the impact of deforestation. In remarks made earlier this week, the governor said,

“I am deeply grateful to the Prince of Wales and the United Kingdom for working together with Florida to exchange knowledge and expertise to reduce the harmful effects of greenhouse gases. I look forward to our continued and expanding partnership to learn more about increasing our use of renewable energy and decreasing our carbon emissions.”
