Businesses Burnish Their Green Side

January 14th, 2008 · No Comments

Barnett is having his San Francisco design team redo all of Shaklee’s packaging to appeal to a younger and hipper crowd. His wife, Sloan, a former TV reporter, is contributing by hosting popular house parties to show off the Shaklee line. It doesn’t hurt that the parties and their guest lists have been mentioned in the papers. And this season, Shaklee receives the ultimate compliment – its Get Clean starter kit was included in Oprah’s Favorite Things gift guide.

Barnett is already seeing financial gains in his green investment. Since 2004, the company has posted growth in the double digits. And its CEO is pleased.

“In the long run, I think it’s more fun and rewarding to be in a business where you think you’re doing something good, as opposed to just making money.”

Winslow Sees Green As Profitable

Then there’s Jack Robinson, founder of Winslow Capital Management in Boston and a 25-year veteran of green investing.

winslow_green.pngUnlike the Barnetts, he has a long history of making green investments and being green on the home front. He was raised in a rural Connecticut home with parents who believed in self-sufficiency. His parents, in fact, co-wrote the homesteading guide The Have-More Plan in the ’50s. The subject was not lost on young Robinson, who learned from an early age about sustainable living.

After honing his investments skills with Prudential Securities, Mr. Robinson went to work for two environmentally focused companies – Garden Way Inc. and the National Association of Gardening. In doing so, he discovered a possible niche for investors who cared about the environment. In 1983, he founded Winslow Management Company with the goal of proving that environmentally focused investments could make money for clients.
