Scientists from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy have collaborated in developing new water quality software that enhances a water system’s ability to detect when there has been intentional or unintentional contamination. Officials said the software, called Canary, can help detect a wide variety of chemical and biological contaminants, including pesticides, metals, and pathogens. Once contamination is detected quickly, a water utility could issue a “Do Not Drink” order to prevent customers from ingesting the water.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense program is partnering with American Water, the nation’s largest publicly traded water services provider, to launch the national “We’re for Water” campaign that will coincide with peak water use season in many parts of America.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has launched a Spanish-language toll-free hotline to get questions answered about pesticides. The toll-free number is staffed from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Messages in English and Spanish will instruct callers to leave a voice-mail message for after- hours calls or when bilingual staff are not immediately available. The Hotline Number is 1-888-919-4372.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced a half million dollar grant to the Central New York Regional Planning and Development Board to fund a project designed to reduce greenhouse gas pollution in Central New York.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today awarded its Clean Air Excellence Award to America’s Greenest Campus. The winners – the college with the greatest number of participants, and the college with the greatest per-person carbon reduction – were each awarded $5,000 for sustainability projects of their choosing. University of Maryland, College Park (with 2,257 participants) and Arizona’s Rio Salado College (with 4.4% carbon reduced per person) were the victors.

The American Lung Association State of the Air 2010 report ranks the metropolitan areas by the levels of ozone and particle pollution during 2006, 2007 and 2008. For particle pollution, the ALA ranks separately the areas with high year-round (annual average) levels and high short-term levels (24-hour) found in monitoring sites across the United States. Data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is used to compile the rankings.

The Biggest Loser. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced it will sponsor the first national energy efficiency contest of its kind among a field of 14 commercial buildings from across the country. The building that sheds the most energy waste on a percentage basis will be declared the winner at EPA’s final weigh-in on Oct. 26, 2010.
